This book is part of the ICE textbook series and covers the main concepts of geotechnical engineering. These include site investigation, ground improvement techniques, shallow foundations, deep foundations, retaining structures, embankments, machine foundations and geotechnical reinforcement. Each of its nine chapters is presented clearly and includes a summary, learning aims, questions for practice and a useful list of references and further reading. Some chapters also benefit from worked examples. The material in the book has been developed for an undergraduate programme and will be a useful reference for all students on civil and geotechnical engineering degree courses.
