Paperback. Currents of Change is a sweeping 17th-century historical novel that brings to life the powerful Occaneechi (Saponi) nation on Occoneechee Island along the Roanoke River. Through the eyes of Chief Posseclay and his family, readers enter a vibrant Indigenous world shaped by skilled hunters, expert farmers, gifted artisans, and far-reaching traders who guided the Great Trading Path-one of the most influential routes in early American history. As European settlers push inland and foreign goods drift upriver, the Occaneechi confront rising pressures that threaten their independence, alliances, and identity. Their homeland becomes a crossroads of cultures, commerce, and conflict, forcing the community to navigate shifting political landscapes and the accelerating forces of colonial expansion. What follows is a powerful story of resilience, leadership, and the determination to preserve a way of life against the mounting tides of change. Rich in Native American history, frontier detail, and the cultural heritage of the Piedmont tribes, Currents of Change offers an immersive portrait of an Indigenous community standing at the edge of profound transformation. Perfect for readers of historical fiction, Indigenous studies, early American history, and novels rooted in cultural identity and survival, this book delivers a vivid, human story shaped by tradition, courage, and the enduring strength of community. From the Lake Gaston Short-Story Series, where regional history, whispered legends, and imagined mysteries blend into atmospheric short fiction. This item is printed on demand. On a four-mile island at the confluence of the Dan and Roanoke, Chief Posseclay has built the most powerful trading empire in the Piedmont. Astride the Great Trading Path, his people decide which furs go to Virginia and which muskets come back.
Through Posseclay, his wife Nuna, daughter Elara the weaver, and sons Kestrel and Chayton, you live inside a vibrant 17th-century Indigenous town — corn, beans and squash, river weirs, chert arrowheads, winter counts, and the stories that hold a people together.
Then Nathaniel Bacon arrives.
In 1676, Bacon's Rebellion shatters the balance. Forced to fight the Susquehannock, betrayed by the English they fed, the Occaneechi watch their island burn. From the ashes, survivors Elara and Chayton lead their people to the Eno River, to Fort Christianna, and into a new identity as the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation.
Based on real history — Occoneechee Island now lies beneath Kerr Lake / Buggs Island Lake — Currents of Change is Book 4 of the Lake Gaston Short Story Series but stands alone as a novel of resilience, leadership, and what endures after displacement
