14" x 8½". Corner-stapled typescript rectos only. Pp. 100. Very good: light wear to first leaf at staple; faint toning strips to first and last few leaves. This is an incredibly thorough report written by Dr. Alfred C. Glassell, Jr. - avid fisherman, philanthropist and leader of Yale University's 1957 Seychelles oceanographic expedition. While naturally the majority of the content concerns ocean life and fishing, there are also gems to be gleaned from his tales of traveling the open seas and interacting with the natives. Glassell was known as a lifelong advocate for marine biology research. He made his fortune in oil and gas in Louisiana and Texas and co-founded the Transcontinental Gas Pipeline Corporation. His namesake collection of African, Indonesian and Pre-Columbian gold is a showpiece of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and a research laboratory at the University of Miami is also named in his honor. In 1953 Glassell caught a black marlin weighing 1,560 pounds with a handheld rod; according to Marlin magazine this was still a record as of 2023, despite major improvements in fishing technology. He donated the fish to the Smithsonian, who have leased it long-term to join several other of his specimens at the Houston Museum of Science. This 100-page, intricate diary starts out: "Tuesday, 30 July 57. Today begins the traveling period of ACGJr for the Yale-Seychelles Indian Ocean Expedition. It is with some mixed feelings and wonderings that I contemplate the beginning of my greatest adventure into a strange ocean." Glassell refers to himself as "the man from Texas" throughout, and at one point reminisces, "While we were waiting in line for the ferry, my thoughts drifted back to my early days as an oil scout in South Louisiana." The text has vivid observations on the weather, fishing luck and lack thereof, countless birds, plants and animals, the various islands visited, local foods and actions of the natives. The expedition first spent time in Ceylon, "surely one of the world's most fascinating spots. There are innumerable religions here and they don't bother each other. There are soothsayers of whom the accounts are fantastic . . . The Island is full of ancient relics and wrecks." A few pages show the leader enthralled upon witnessing a "Firewalk": "People with offerings were entering the temple. Drums were beating, excitement was in the air . . . A group of natives from the crowd shouldered the Goddess and the procession took off for the nearest river . . . My observation was that the priest, at this moment, was under complete hypnosis . . . walked right through the flaming hot burning coals . . . I requested and was granted permission to go to the firewalkers and look them over. I was anxious to determine for myself their physical condition . . . These people appeared calm . . . There were no burns or marks of any kind on their feet. The saris of the women showed no sign of scorching . . . if you have complete faith, then you don't burn at all. Not even the hair is burned off your legs. Phenomenal!!!" The expedition continued to travel: "We lay to off Furikuri Island of the North Male Atoll all night . . . The people are dark, very shy and seem to speak an Arabic and Maldivian . . ." "In accordance with the wishes of the Prime Minister I decided to visit Huhule Island and obtain some coconuts with his compliments . . . There was a very small native village. Women and children came down to meet us . . . The women even let us take their pictures, most unusual for these Islands." "The Indian Pact fleet is maneuvering today and the warships are heading through the bay for the sea as we troll for bait. There is one U.S. tanker with the exercise group. It is quite a pretty sight catching bait here close to shore and watching the battleships of India, Pakistan and Ceylon parade by." "They were the Chiefs of the Atoll . . . he was welcoming us to Fadiffolu and wanted to know if there was anything he could do for us. It seems the.…

You may notice that despite the name of our business, you won't find a lot of books here. While we do sell some printed matter, we specialize in selling original source materials that tell compelling American stories. Our principal abandoned a reasonably successful law career to do this full time because life is too short not jump out of bed excited to start a work day. Our slogan, “The Extraordinary History of the Every Day”, matches our approach to the trade: we seek to preserve the exceptional stories of everyday people. Most of these folks probably had no idea that their actions were anything other than ordinary. As you look through our website and catalogs you'll find a wealth of compelling narratives. Also note that we don't limit ourselves to those lost to history as our work has enhanced many a wiki page. Considering our present inventory, you might also think we only buy and sell material related to underrepresented social groups and social movements. That's because of the response we receive from customers for this type of material and we would do nearly anything to avoid practicing law again. Truth be told, we get excited about preserving all sorts of interesting stories so the more you would educate us about your collecting interests, wants and what gets you excited, the more likely we'd recognize this material as something we should bring to market. So please feel free to reach out and tell us what you collect. Also, if you have items that you think may be of interest to us, please do not hesitate to write or call.…
