Notre-Dame was built on the ruins of two earlier churches, which were predated by a Gallo-Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter. The cathedral was initiated by Bishop Maurice de Sully of Paris, who conceived it's conversion into a single building on ruins of the two earlier basilicas. Its foundation stone was laid 1163 by Pope Alexander III.
