Neuware - I have discovered that young preachers need more than information. They need formation. They need somebody to tell them what ministry feels like after the ordination service is over. They need somebody to explain what happens when the crowd does not come. They need somebody to tell them that a closed door does not mean God has forgotten them. They need to know what to do when family life becomes difficult, when money is scarce, when leaders disappoint them, when a sermon falls flat, when jealousy enters the room, when criticism gets personal, when their body is tired, and when they begin wondering whether they heard God correctly in the first place. Those lessons do not always show up in a syllabus. But they belong in the education of a preacher. That is what these letters are. They are part classroom.Part testimony.Part warning.Part encouragement.Part confession. And, I hope, part grandfather sitting on the porch saying, 'Son, before you go any farther, let me tell you something I learned down the road.'I did not write these letters because I believe I did everything right.Quite the opposite.I wrote them because I have made mistakes.I have moved too fast.I have taken on too much.I have had seasons when ministry crowded family.I have wrestled with disappointment.I have misunderstood people and been misunderstood by people.I have had to learn when to speak and when to be quiet.I have had to learn that not every open door belongs to me.I have had to learn that gifting without wisdom can hurt people.I have had to learn that leadership without prayer becomes dangerous.I have had to learn that a preacher can be publicly successful and privately exhausted. And I have had to learn over and over again that Jesus is enough. That is why I want to give the young preacher more than my victories.I want to give him some of my scars too. There is no sense in you falling into every hole I fell into if I can point it out before you get there. If I bumped my head on a low ceiling, I ought to tell you to duck.If I discovered that a certain road ends in frustration, I ought to tell you before you spend ten years walking down it.That is mentoring. That is discipleship. That is part of the ministry of Angelos Biblical Institute.…

They are part classroom.
Part testimony.
Part warning.
Part encouragement.
Part confession.
And, I hope, part grandfather sitting on the porch saying, “Son, before you go any farther, let me tell you something I learned down the road.”
I did not write these letters because I believe I did everything right.
Quite the opposite.
I wrote them because I have made mistakes.
I have moved too fast.
I have taken on too much.
I have had seasons when ministry crowded family.
I have wrestled with disappointment.
I have misunderstood people and been misunderstood by people.
I have had to learn when to speak and when to be quiet.
I have had to learn that not every open door belongs to me.
I have had to learn that gifting without wisdom can hurt people.
I have had to learn that leadership without prayer becomes dangerous.
I have had to learn that a preacher can be publicly successful and privately exhausted.
And I have had to learn over and over again that Jesus is enough.
That is why I want to give the young preacher more than my victories.
I want to give him some of my scars too.
There is no sense in you falling into every hole I fell into if I can point it out before you get there.
If I bumped my head on a low ceiling, I ought to tell you to duck.
If I discovered that a certain road ends in frustration, I ought to tell you before you spend ten years walking down it.
That is mentoring.
That is discipleship.
That is part of the ministry of Angelos Biblical Institute.
