TOME SECOND. Nouvelle & Troisieme Edition. VOLUME 2 contains the complete dictionary of architectural terms from Daviler's landmark "Cours d'Architecture" (first published in France in 1691). With frontispiece b&w engraving. Author Augustin Charles Daviler (or d'Aviler / Aviler) (1653-1701), was "a 17th-century French architect. He was one of the main promoters of the vignolesc canon, but far from simply publishing it, he developed it by proposing variations of motifs to give more flexibility and expressiveness to the rigid system of the five orders". Title page printed in black & red. With 4-page Avertissement, followed by main body of text, titled "Explication des Termes d'Architecture, &c.", with illustrated heading. No illustrations within. Full title as follows: "Dictionnaire d'Architecture, Ou Explication de Tous les Termes, Dont on se Sert Dans l'Architecture, les Mathematiques, la Geometrie, la Mecanique, l'Hydraulique, le Dessein, la Peinture, la Sculpture, les Mesures, les Instruments, la Coutume, &c. La Maconnerie, La Coupe, et l`Apareil des Pierres, la Chapenterie, la Couverture, la Menuiserie, la Serrurerie, la Vitrerie, la Plomberie, le Pave, la Fouille des Terres, le Jardinage, &c. Bound in full leather, raised bands, gilt lettering & elaborate gilt design within compartments to spine, gilt-stamped design to front & rear boards. NOTE: A GOOD COPY ONLY. Handling wear, spine damaged (worming & worn), slight unobtrusive marginal worming to preliminary pages, light staining to boards & lower margin of pages throughout, contemporary ink notation/signature to title page ("Mgr. Archeueque de Narbonne" [?] with additional pencil note on front pastedown), otherwise a clean tight solid leatherbound copy of a scarce & classic architectural reference book. 259pp. RARE.
