Riassunto:
Excerpt from Differential and Integral Calculus: An Introductory Course for Colleges and Engineering Schools
The function is also called the dependent variable, and the argu ment the independent variable.
For example, the volume of a sphere is a function of its radius, because it depends for its value upon the value of the radius. Also, the ordinate of a point on a curve is a function of its abscissa, the sine of an angle is a function of the angle, the velocity Of a falling body is a function of the time that it has been falling, etc., etc.
On the other hand, since the radius of a sphere depends for its value upon the volume, the radius may be regarded as the func tion and the volume as the argument. So, too, the abscissa of a point on a curve may be regarded as a function of the ordinate, an angle as a function of its Sine, etc., etc. And, in general, if y is a function of x, x is also a function of y.
