Riassunto
Seeking a balance between discourse analysis and pragmatics and between theory and practice, linguists offer a cross-sectional view of scholarship in the two closely related disciplines, specifically from the perspective of how the intersection of theory and practice enables Nigerian scholars to understand and analyze texts that have pan-Nigerian peculiarities. The topics include conversational analysis, the history and scope of pragmatics, the speech act analysis of president Goodluck Jonathan and General Mohammed Buhari's 31 March 2015 telephone conversation, contextualizing an African brand of terrorism in the eye of critical discourse: a case study of Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamic sect, and forensic analysis.
