In A Discourse on Inequality Rousseau si propone di dimostrare come la crescita della civiltà corrompe la felicità e la libertà naturali dell'uomo creando disuguaglianze artificiali di ricchezza, potere e privilegio sociale. Sostenendo che l'uomo primitivo era uguale ai suoi simili, Rousseau credeva che man mano che le società diventavano più sofisticate, i membri più forti e intelligenti della comunità ottenevano un vantaggio innaturale sui loro fratelli più deboli e che le costituzioni istituite per correggere questi squilibri attraverso la pace e la giustizia in realtà non facevano altro che perpetuarli. Gli argomenti politici e sociali di Rousseau nel Discorso furono una denuncia estremamente influente delle condizioni sociali del suo tempo e uno dei documenti più rivoluzionari del diciottesimo secolo.
