First edition. 'Campbell s first published book and a response to what he regarded as 'one of the most dangerous attacks' on religion, David Hume's 'Essay on Miracles' (1748). Hume had been shown the manuscript and raised some objections. Campbell softened the offending passages and earned the respect of his adversary. Letters from Hume to Campbell and from Reid to Hume record their mutual regard, even though they were in profound disagreement upon almost every point of philosophy' (Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century British Philosophers, Thoemmes Press, 1999).
