Paperback. What happens when the strength that helped you survive begins shaping the person you become? In more than twenty-three years in public safety, Rabbi Yehuda Ben Abraham learned how to remain calm when others were afraid, make decisions when there were no good choices, and carry responsibility long after everyone else had gone home. Those abilities were necessary. They were also not without cost. The Distance from Here to There: Responsibility, Survival, and the Human Soul is a deeply personal exploration of what happens when responsibility becomes identity, survival becomes habit, and the protections we build begin creating distance from the people we love and from parts of ourselves we once knew more easily.Drawing from lived experience, Jewish wisdom, and years spent confronting both extraordinary tragedy and ordinary human need, Ben Abraham reflects on grief, guilt, emotional distance, presence, faith, leadership, and the difficult work of learning what belongs to us to carry-and what does not. This is not a book about forgetting what happened or returning to the person you were before it happened. It is about understanding what remains, recognizing what survival required, and discovering that healing may not mean putting the past behind us. Sometimes it means learning how to carry it differently.Written for first responders, caregivers, clergy, leaders, parents, and anyone who has spent years being the person others depend upon, The Distance from Here to There asks a quieter question beneath all the others: When no one needs you to be strong for a moment, can you still recognize the person who remains? What happens when the strength that helped you survive begins shaping the person you become?
In more than twenty-three years in public safety, Rabbi Yehuda Ben Abraham learned how to remain calm when others were afraid, make decisions when there were no good choices, and carry responsibility long after everyone else had gone home. Those abilities were necessary. They were also not without cost.
The Distance from Here to There: Responsibility, Survival, and the Human Soul is a deeply personal exploration of what happens when responsibility becomes identity, survival becomes habit, and the protections we build begin creating distance from the people we love and from parts of ourselves we once knew more easily.
Drawing from lived experience, Jewish wisdom, and years spent confronting both extraordinary tragedy and ordinary human need, Ben Abraham reflects on grief, guilt, emotional distance, presence, faith, leadership, and the difficult work of learning what belongs to us to carry—and what does not.
This is not a book about forgetting what happened or returning to the person you were before it happened. It is about understanding what remains, recognizing what survival required, and discovering that healing may not mean putting the past behind us. Sometimes it means learning how to carry it differently.
Written for first responders, caregivers, clergy, leaders, parents, and anyone who has spent years being the person others depend upon, The Distance from Here to There asks a quieter question beneath all the others:
When no one needs you to be strong for a moment, can you still recognize the person who remains?
