Hardcover. "Divining Rod: An Experimental and Psychological Investigation" offers an exhaustive scientific and historical examination of the phenomenon of dowsing. Authored by William Barrett and Theodore Besterman, this comprehensive work seeks to understand the mechanisms behind the use of a divining rod to locate underground water, minerals, and other hidden objects. Moving beyond mere folklore, the authors apply rigorous experimental methods and psychological analysis to determine whether the successes attributed to dowsers result from external physical forces or subconscious human perception. The book meticulously documents numerous case studies, historical accounts, and controlled experiments conducted to test the validity of the practice. It delves into the history of dowsing across different cultures and eras, while simultaneously addressing contemporary theories of the early 20th century regarding motor automatism and the role of the unconscious mind. As a seminal text in the field of psychical research, "Divining Rod: An Experimental and Psychological Investigation" remains a vital resource for those interested in the history of science, the boundaries of human psychology, and the enduring mystery of water witching. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
