Religion cannot answer every question. But what I do know is that at its best the Christian faith communicates a story which provides meaning and makes sense in the face of guilt, wickedness, suffering and death, and of grace, joy and hope. I have experienced how true Christianity empowers women and men, and guarantees and celebrates our highest ideals. I know how true Christianity provides a steady, consistent basis of love and trust which are nourished by allegiance to a particular community; and how the language of Christian belief does justice (in a way so much trivialized and reduced language does not) to our longings and desires for all that is good, and of God. I have seen how true Christianity has provided a base for protest and resistance against injustice - as in our own day among those for whom liberation has rightly been their abiding passion.
