It describes the street celebration that erupted at 8th and Olive Streets at the news the Japanese had surrendered ending World War II. All the while, generations of St. Louisans were building and rebuilding a spectacular Downtown with ornate Victorian architecture reflected in the sheer glass walls of International style skyscrapers, with the nation's first skyscraper, with lavish Art Deco civic buildings, and with a train station modeled after a walled, medieval city. Downtown St. Louis recalls tells of the building of the Gateway Arch, the 630 foot shimmering sculpture that embodies the history of St. Louis while framing Downtown's skyline.

Informazioni sull'autore: NiNi Harris, a life-long St. Louisan, has researched and written about St. Louis' architecture, ethnic heritage, neighborhood history, and the Civil War in St. Louis. For thirty years she has been giving tours of Downtown St. Louis that explore the frontier history of St. Louis, the evolution of the Skyscraper As Told in the Architecture of Downtown, and Downtown's dramatic Art Deco Architecture. During the 1980's and 1990's, she used to lead tour groups down the middle of Washington Avenue enabling people to look up at the magnificent cornices as she emphasized the significance of the then vacant buildings. Harris is delighted that today the activity and traffic on Washington Avenue has forced her tour groups onto the sidewalks. "Downtown St. Louis" is her 12th book about St. Louis. After working for 20+ years at a major ag/pharma company, Don Korte joined Reedy Press in 2009. He co-authored Victory Through Valor: A Collection of World War II Memoirs and the 2nd Edition of Finally, A Locally Produced Guidebook to St. Louis, and contributed photographs to St. Louis: An Illustrated Timeline and St. Louis Brews, 2nd Edition. His interest in photography dates back to the 70's.
