CHAPTER 1
The Rich, the Scriptures, and the Detractors
Show me the money!
— Jerry McGuire, 1996 movie
Two common measures are used to identify the rich. The most frequently used is the measure of annual income. This is most often used because summaries of tax returns that contain reports of annual income are regularly published. The second measure is that of wealth. It represents the value of one's property, net of all debt obligations. One's wealth is often reported to banks when qualifying for loans but is usually kept confidential.
In general, those with considerable wealth have relatively high incomes because much of their wealth is invested in income-producing properties, such as stocks and bonds. There are exceptions, such as the rancher who makes little from cattle operations but owns valuable land. For the most part, the rich who are regularly condemned are those who have considerable wealth and enjoy the lifestyles that only the higher incomes can support.
In Mark's Gospel, Jesus contends that the poor will always be with us. This scripture implies that the rich will also be with us. There will always be an inequality of income for a host of reasons. The common use of the term rich refers to those at the top — a relative term rather than some absolute standard. The rich in some parts of the world may have incomes that would not qualify them as rich in other parts of the world. The central point here is that there will always be those at the top, and their position at the top troubles many who have compassion for those in poverty.
Many have turned to scripture to disparage the rich. The specific scriptures cited are often the same and are usually pulled out of context. Consider the usual citations:
Pay attention, you wealthy people! Weep and moan over the miseries coming upon you. Your riches have rotted. Moths have destroyed your clothes. Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be evidence against you. It will eat your flesh like fire. Consider the treasure you have hoarded in the last days.
Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.
Perhaps the most frequently cited scripture is from Mark:
"It's easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter God's kingdom."
Taken out of context, this is a convincing set of New Testament texts. The Old Testament contains references too, but these taken from Proverbs have more to do with the quest for riches than the accumulation of riches:
Don't wear yourself out trying to get rich;
be smart enough to stop.
When your eyes fly to wealth
it is gone; it grows wings
like an eagle and flies heavenward.
Reliable people will have abundant blessings,
but those with get-rich-quick schemes won't go unpunished.
