Ellie Is Learning the Meaning of Feelings
by Raina Shepard

Ellie Is Learning the Meaning of Feelings is a gentle, heartwarming story that helps children understand the emotions that live inside them. Ellie, a sweet young elephant with a big heart, experiences a full day of feelings—joy, frustration, loneliness, excitement, nervousness, kindness, and more. As Ellie learns what each emotion means and how it shows up in her body, children begin to recognize their own feelings and discover healthy ways to express them.

Through soft, expressive illustrations and simple, relatable moments, young readers learn that every feeling has a purpose. Ellie models emotional awareness in a way children naturally connect to—she notices what she feels, names it, and discovers small coping tools she can use to feel safe and supported. The story reinforces that emotions are not “good” or “bad”; they are messages that help us understand ourselves and the world around us.

This book offers caregivers an easy, nurturing way to talk about emotions with children. Parents, teachers, counselors, and therapists can use Ellie’s experiences to guide conversations about emotional expression, self-regulation, and empathy. The language is soothing and developmentally appropriate, making it ideal for children who are learning to navigate feelings, including those with anxiety, sensory sensitivities, or trauma histories.

Perfect for ages 4–10, Ellie Is Learning the Meaning of Feelings builds confidence, emotional vocabulary, and understanding. It opens the door to meaningful discussions about what children feel and why they feel it, helping them grow into emotionally aware, compassionate, and resilient individuals.

With its comforting message and beautifully illustrated pages, this story becomes more than a book—it becomes an emotional toolkit for children and the adults who love them.

Ellie’s journey also helps children feel seen and understood in ways many picture books overlook. Each feeling Ellie experiences mirrors a moment children face in their own lives—wanting a turn, missing someone special, trying something new, or feeling unsure about what to do next. These moments remind young readers that their inner experiences are normal and shared by others. Ellie’s gentle personality shows children that they don’t have to hide their feelings or be afraid of them; emotions can be talked about openly and safely.

Caregivers will appreciate how naturally the story creates connection. Reading about Ellie becomes a bonding experience, opening opportunities for children to point to a page and say, “I felt that today,” or “That happened to me.” These conversations help adults understand what children cannot always express on their own. The book also supports social-emotional learning by teaching empathy, self-awareness, communication skills, and the ability to recognize emotions in others.

Beautifully illustrated with soft, comforting colors, the artwork reinforces calmness and emotional safety. Ellie’s expressions are easy for young readers to understand, making the book especially helpful for children who learn visually or who struggle with identifying facial cues. This makes it ideal for classrooms, counseling rooms, and bedtime reading rituals where children need reassurance and gentle emotional guidance.

Ellie Is Learning the Meaning of Feelings is more than a story—it is a resource families can return to again and again. Whether a child is overwhelmed, excited, confused, or simply curious, Ellie’s experiences help them understand themselves with kindness and confidence. This book is a meaningful addition to any home library, therapy toolkit, or early education program dedicated to nurturing emotional growth and resilience in children.
