A married set of these popular juvenile tales, they reflected the cultural, religious, and moral values of the time and were chiefly based on the British "Cheap Repository Tracts" series. Many of them were penned by author, poet, and playwright Hannah Moore (1745 - 1833), writing under the pseudonym 'Z.,' among others. Both volumes were inscribed and dated by Colonel Henry Rutgers (1745 - 1830) - Revolutionary War hero, philanthropist, and patron of, then, Queen's College - now Rutgers University, after whom the institution was renamed in 1825. The recipients of the books were the daughters of Peter Douw Beekman (1762 - 1835) of the prominent Douw family - himself a Revolutionary War veteran and justice of the peace in Albany. - The Entertaining, Moral, and Religious Repository; Containing Upwards of Three Score Separate Performances, All of Which Are Written in a Simple Yet Pleasing Stile, and Are Eminently Calculated for the Amusement and Instruction of the Youth of Both Sexes.
