STEVE WILDER has spent the past 17 years practicing healthcare risk management in acute care hospitals, outpatient surgery centers, small rural hospitals, and long-term care facilities. Mr. Wilder has developed management programs in the Safety, Life Safety, Hazardous Materials, Security, and Emergency Preparedness sections of the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) Environment of Care. Originally the founder of S. Wilder and Associates, Inc., he has been a consultant for hospitals and nursing homes in the areas of safety, security, and risk management program administration since 1990.
An experienced trial expert, Mr. Wilder has consulted for several law firms and insurance companies on issues of healthcare safety and risk management. He also has written numerous articles for magazines and trade journals.
In addition to his career in healthcare risk management, Mr. Wilder has also spent the past 23 years in the fire service, currently holding the rank of deputy chief. He is an Illinois-licensed paramedic, a certified fire science instructor, and on the teaching staff for the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute and at Southern Illinois University. He has written one book on fire service risk management and has been involved in the production of over twenty videos on healthcare safety, security, and risk management.
Mr. Wilder earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Governor's State University in University Park, Illinois. He also holds teaching certificates in numerous areas of public safety administration. In addition, he has attained the master level as a Certified Healthcare Safety Professional.
CHRIS SORENSEN has spent 20 years in healthcare safety and security management at some of the largest, most prestigious healthcare organizations in the country. Mr. Sorensen has served as the Chief Safety Officer with responsibility for all seven areas of the JCAHO Environment of Care, developing management programs in the Safety, Life Safety, Hazardous Materials, Security, Medical Equipment, Utilities, and Emergency Preparedness sections of the Environment of Care. After joining S. Wilder & Associates, Inc., in 1992 as a consultant, Mr. Sorensen became a partner with the firm in 1996, when the name was changed to Sorensen, Wilder and Associates (SWA) Through SWA, he has consulted for hospitals, nursing homes, government agencies, retailing, and industry in areas of safety and security management.
A recognized expert in the field of hospital security, Mr. Sorensen has been actively involved in numerous professional organizations impacting healthcare safety and security services, including:
- International Association of Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS), serving as chairman for the Chicago Chapter of IAHSS
- American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS)
- Illinois Security Chiefs Association (ISCA)

Mr. Sorensen achieved IAHSS's highest recognition in 1994, Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA). He is also a martial artist and has trained thousands of police officers, security officers, physicians, nurses, paramedics, and EMTs across the nation in self-defense and defensive tactics. He has written and directed over thirty videos on healthcare safety and security management.
