She worked for over two decades as a reporter and columnist at the Wall Street Journal and taught journalism to graduate students at the University of California, Berkeley, and Stanford. Her previous books include The Barbary Plague: The Black Death in Victorian San Francisco. She lives in San Francisco with her family.
