"Evolution in the Balances" is a significant theological and philosophical critique of evolutionary theory, written during a period of profound intellectual and cultural debate regarding the origins of humanity. Frank E. Allen explores the tensions between biological science and religious faith, seeking to weigh the claims of Darwinism against the tenets of Christian doctrine. The work serves as a detailed defense of a providential worldview, questioning the evidence and the moral implications of the evolutionary hypothesis as it was understood in the early twentieth century.

The text addresses fundamental questions about the nature of life, the reliability of scientific observation, and the authority of biblical revelation. By analyzing the scientific discourse of his era, Allen provides a robust defense of traditional belief systems in the face of modernizing trends. "Evolution in the Balances" offers readers a valuable historical perspective on the development of creationist thought and the enduring conflict between different ways of understanding the universe. It remains an important resource for those interested in the history of science, theology, and the cultural landscape of the 1920s.
