"An Experimental Study of Thinking" is a rigorous exploration of the cognitive processes that define human reasoning. Written by the distinguished psychologist Edna Heidbreder, this work represents a pivotal moment in early 20th-century psychology, moving away from purely philosophical inquiry toward systematic, empirical observation. The study focuses on how individuals navigate complex mental tasks, providing a detailed analysis of the mechanisms involved in problem-solving and concept formation.

Through a series of controlled experiments, the text examines the functional aspects of the mind at work, offering both qualitative and quantitative insights into the act of thinking. Heidbreder carefully documents the subjective experiences and objective performance of participants, creating a comprehensive picture of the intellectual operations that occur during deliberate mental effort. This work is an essential resource for those interested in the history of experimental psychology and the foundational theories that paved the way for modern cognitive science. By investigating the structural and functional elements of thought, "An Experimental Study of Thinking" remains a valuable contribution to the scientific understanding of the human intellect.
