SCHUSTER, Arthur. "Experiments on the discharge of electricity through gases. Sketch of a theory" in "Proceedings of the Royal Society of London", London, 1884, volume 37. Very nice copy, bound in half-calf and marbled boards. Vii, xxix, 495pp, four engraved plates. Stamp at rear indicates that this volume is from the Institut fur Angewandte Mathematik der Universitat Bonn. VG. The Schuster appears on pp 317-339. Also bound with: Arthur Cayley, "On the Non-Euclidean Plane Geometry", pp 82-102. H.S. Hele Shaw, "The Theory of Continuous Calculating Machines, and a New Mechanism on a New Principle for this and other purposes", pp 189-191 (being an abstract of a paper, a fuller account being published in the Philosophical Transaction 1885). The volume has many other papers of interest. [++] "In 1884 [in the paper offered here], German-born English physicist Franz Arthur Friedrich Schuster (1851 1934) studied the curved trajectory of cathode-ray particles (which he hypothesized were electrically charged atoms) in a magnetic field, and formulated an algebraic relationship between their charge/mass (e/m) ratio and their velocity. Then in 1890 he estimated the upper and lower bounds for this ratio and published the results in two papers."--Wenner, History of Physics, p. 391. [++] "Schuster Kt FRS FRSE was a German-born British physicist known for his work in spectroscopy, electrochemistry, optics, X-radiography and the application of harmonic analysis to physics. Schuster's integral is named after him."--Wikipedia [++] "Schuster is known for his work on the discharge of electricity through gases and in seismology. In addition to working intensively as a research scientist he was an active administrator, taking a leading part in the organization of three universities Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds. In 1904 he drew up the program of the International Union for Solar Research in collaboration with Hale and Arrhenius. In 1915 he was president of the British Association, and in 1918 he participated in the formation of the International Research Council. He was foreign secretary of the Royal Society from 1920 to 1924."--Encyclopedia dot com.
