The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals by Charles Darwin is an example of classic non-fiction first published in 1872 in the United Kingdom. This version is based on an edition from 1899.
A true book of value, a classic that continues to live on across the ages. Books from yesteryear have an artistic quality and a permanence often lacking in books from the modern era. You are sure to love this work. A book of evolutionary theory of the finest type.
A Glimpse Inside
We will now consider our second Principle, that of Antithesis. Certain states of the mind lead, as we have seen in the last chapter, to certain habitual movements which were primarily, or may still be, of service; and we shall find that when a directly opposite state of mind is induced, there is a strong and involuntary tendency to the performance of movements of a directly opposite nature, though these have never been of any service. A few striking instances of antithesis will be given, when we treat of the special expressions of man; but as, in these cases, we are particularly liable to confound conventional or artificial gestures and expressions with those which are innate or universal, and which alone deserve to rank as true expressions, I will in the present chapter almost confine myself to the lower animals.
Synopsis
The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals is an evolutionary theory work by Charles Darwin initially published in 1872 in the United Kingdom. It is Darwin's third book on the subject of evolution. It was originally only intended to make up a single chapter in Darwin's book, The Descent of Man, but grew exponentially in size to justify being published as its own separate book. It's a fascinating insight into the biological aspects of emotional life and where the human physical representations of emotional expression developed from. It was one of the first books to be illustrated with photographs (and the original illustrations are reproduced as part of this publication). The use of acute observation allied to amusing anecdotes means that this work is widely regarded as being the most accessible of Darwin's works for the general reader.
