Edward IV. to A.D. 1864. Selected from the original rolls for the use of the Wimbledon Common Committee. London, Wyman & Sons, Printers, 1866. xii, 650 pp. Publisher's original green cloth, with lettering piece. Spine bumped, corners worn, boards stained and rubbed. Front hinge starting to crack, but secure. Rear hinge splitting but secure. Previous owner's signature (Edward Jenks) to top of title page. Ex-library, with location label to spine, library stamps to page edges and title, bookplate to front pastedown. $250. * This book was very likely a gift to the prolific author and legal historian Edward Jenks (1861-1939). According to the inscription, "M. H. J" gave the gift on 16 December 1886, while Edward Jenks was still at King's College, University of Cambridge. He was a "brilliant law student" there, and was "placed first in the law tripos of 1886" (Oxford DNB). The inscription "Westdean Lib: 1813", marking this as a volume from the library of what is now called West Dean House, near Chichester, West Sussex, once the grand home of naval officer and great collector of art and books Henry John Peachey, 3rd Baron Selsey (1787-1838). "Intended and believed to contain an extract of all entries having any direct or indirect bearing on the questions affecting the Common or the rights attached to it."--Prefatory remarks by the editor, P.H. Lawrence.
