--Kirkus Reviews
Do you know why dalmatians were a necessity in nineteenth-century firehouses? Have you ever heard of a thermal imaging camera or a quint truck? Do you know how fire trucks can override traffic signals? Did you realize that firefighters do more than fight fires?
Filled with vivid explanations and detailed illustrations of firefighters in action and the equipment used in any given situation-from extinguishers to the Jaws of Life, from sirens to outriggers--this book is an excellent introduction to the courageous, intense, and heroic profession of firefighting.
Whether your child is an aspiring firefighter or just likes the way fire trucks look and sound, here is a wonderful way to learn more about these admirable rescue workers who touch our lives no matter who we are or where we live.
Award-winning author Dori Hillestad Butler was inspired to write this book because of her sons' fascination with firefighting when they were little and because of her father-in-law, who is a retired fire marshal.
Butler began her career writing for magazines. She has been a ghostwriter for the Sweet Valley Twins and the Boxcar Children series, and she is the author of My Mom's Having a Baby, Sliding into Home, Do You Know the Monkey Man, and the Tank Talbott books. She lives in Coralville, Iowa, with her husband, two sons, a dog, and a cat.
Illustrator Joan C. Waites has illustrated more than thirty-five books for the educational and trade marketplace, including three previous books for Pelican: Moon's Cloud Blanket, The Waving Girl, and Daniel Boone: Trailblazer. Joan lives and works in Silver Spring, Maryland, with her husband, Gerard, and their three children.
