What if consciousness does not begin in the brain? What if, before there was thought, memory, language, or even a sense of self, there was something much more fundamental: a living body trying to remain alive?

Antonio Damasio is a neurologist and neuroscientist whose work has profoundly influenced the modern study of emotion, decision-making, the self, and consciousness. Born in Portugal and later established in the United States, Damasio built his career at the intersection of clinical neurology, behavioral neuroscience, brain research, and the philosophy of mind.

Giulia De Ponti approaches Damasio as an author asking a more difficult question:

For Damasio, the brain is not an isolated computational machine floating above the organism.

It is part of a living system.

And that living system regulates itself, senses its own internal condition, responds to the world, generates feelings, constructs representations, stores memories, and gradually develops something we recognize as a self.

But is that enough?

Does explaining the biological conditions of consciousness explain consciousness itself?

Damasio has profoundly changed the way we think about emotion and consciousness. But important questions remain.

Can the biological regulation of life fully explain subjective experience?

A journey from brain damage to personality, from emotion to reason, from body regulation to feeling, and from feeling to the emergence of the self.

It is also an invitation to look beyond the easy answers.

Because consciousness is not merely the fact that a brain processes information.

It is the fact that something is happening to someone.

And that may be the beginning of the real mystery.

We ask all customers to contact us for authorisation should they wish to return their order. Orders returned without authorisation may not be credited.
If you wish to return, please contact us within 14 days of receiving your order to obtain authorisation.

Returns requested beyond this time will not be authorised.

Effetti del recesso
