Original political broadside. Broadside. Single sheet. Folio, (15-1/2 by 16-1/2 inches). The entire text of the broadside is a statement by Representative Tristam Burges, defending his record against various charges (e.g. tax evasion, excessive absence from Congress due to sickness, etc.), mentioning the slavery question and calling for his re-election: "I say this not merely for the purpose of present, and momentary benefit; but because I know, and am persuaded, that I must account for my trust. Mr. Eddy's vote on the Missouri question, gave no additional vote to New-england. His vote will enable Missouri to send representatives for her slaves. I will say nothing concerning the moral effect of this vote on the great question of slavery in the Christian world.". Tristam Burges served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Rhode Island, and is known for his famous retort to John Randolf (of Virginia), made while he was member of Congress, "Moral Monsters can not propagate; we rejoice that the father of lies can never become the father of liars." Early ink names on verso, including one of the author and another of "[name] J. Burges" (presumably a relative of the author). Slightly creased, scattered foxing and spotting, slight marginal silverfish damage and few short tears to margins (not affecting printed text, archivally mended on verso), else a very good copy of an uncommon political broadside Broadside.
