Cowhey, a grassroots community organizer, union activist, and former elementary teacher, shares stories and lessons learned from Families with Power/Familias con Poder, a grassroots organization of multicultural low-income students and caregivers in Northamption, Massachusetts, that she co-founded to help children succeed. She describes the organization’s education approach to family engagement, her journey as an educator, and how the organization transformed her work as a teacher and the culture of her school between 2007 and 2020. She discusses culture circles and action plans from the organization's first residential workshop; home visits to students; how she began to look critically at family engagement in her school and who was included or not; activities and programs related to literacy, math, and financial literacy; caregiver trauma and the need for self-care, including programs for self-defense and meditation; healthy eating from school gardens, farmers markets, and community gardens; organization members supporting each other in physical and mental health; cultural organizing; aspects of immigration, including a mutual support group for immigrant families, language and culture clubs, and building solidarity; and the challenges and benefits of working with other community organizations and educator unions.
