Fiese, this collection of psychological research looks at family storytelling: how stories are told, what they contain and how they are built. It also traces how the practice of telling them connects to language acquisition, the regulation of emotion and patterns of interaction within the family. It is arranged in six sections that follow the life cycle in order. The first deals with young children's narrative skill, competence and attachment, and later sections cover adolescence, young adulthood and midlife. The book ends with grandparenthood and the meaning stories carry between generations. An opening chapter by the editors sets out an ecological and developmental framework, drawing on Erikson's account of development and on ideas of the family life cycle. Individual chapters cover the ways parents shape how children narrate, family narratives and children's well-being, and parents telling their own past wrongdoing to teenagers. Others examine how adolescents carry their parents' voices and value lessons into their own identities, preschool-era stories of parents growing up, storytelling practices in Taiwanese families, and grandparents' accounts of the rewards and difficulties of the role.
