The Flagstaff Arts Council selected 10 artists and a poet to contribute to an exhibition addressing the role of fire in forest management. In September of 2014 the group visited the North Rim of the Grand Canyon where numerous fire managers, ecologists, and fighters, spoke about the past, present, and potential futures of fire on the Colorado Plateau. David Chorlton was the poet, and A Field Guide to Fire is the collection of poems he wrote. The book also contains charcoal drawings by Julie Comnick, one of the artists. The poems draw on historic as well as contemporary sources to reflect on differing cultural attitudes toward the use of fire in forests, and they address ecology in the age of climate change. The exhibition, Fires of Change, was conceived as a collaboration between science and art. A Field Guide to Fire is a lyrical response, beautifully balanced by visual art.

Informazioni sull'autore: David Chorlton has lived in Phoenix since 1978 when he moved from Vienna, Austria, with his wife. Born in Austria, he grew up in Manchester, close to rain and the northern English industrial zone. In his early twenties he went to live in Vienna and from there enjoyed many trips around Europe. In Arizona, he has grown ever more fascinated by the desert and its wildlife. He especially enjoys the mountain ranges of southern Arizona, a region that appears frequently in his writing. His Selected Poems from FutureCycle Press appeared in 2014. | Julie Comnick’s paintings and drawings engage the pictorial languages of representation and narration to pose questions about social circumstances and practices. Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions nationally and featured in prominent national publications. She received an MFA in Painting from Montana State University and a BA from The Evergreen State College. Julie lives in Prescott, Arizona, where she is a member of the Arts and Letters faculty at Prescott College.
