This volume stresses the need for a comparative approach when dealing with the funding of party politics and a major related aspect - corruption. This topic lies at the heart of any realistic discussion of the logic of democratic representation. Corruption, or the perception of corruption, has led to an ever-increasing concern with political financing. In some cases the trend is toward a greater role for the state in financing political parties, in others the reverse is true. In this collection the individual experiences of several Latin American countries (including Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, and Venezuela) are examined against the background of Western Europe, with a view to identifying similarities as well as differences. Given the centrality of political parties to liberal democracies, this subject is of great significance. Carlos Malamud is Senior Fellow in Latin America at the Real Instituto Español Elcano de Relaciones Internacionales y Estratégicas and Professor at the UNED University in Spain. He is the author of Partidos políticos y elecciones en la Argentina: La Liga del Sur, 1908-1916 (Madrid, 1997) and editor of Legitimidad, representación y alternancia en España y América Latina: las reformas electorales, 1880-1930 (Mexico, 2000).

Eduard Posado-Carbó is a historian, previously a Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Latin American Studies, University of London and currently a Departmental Lecturer at the Latin American Centre, St Antony’s College, Oxford. He is the author of several essays on the subject of political financing in Colombia and Latin America. He is the editor of Elections Before Democracy, The History of Elections in Europe and Latin America (London, 1996) and, with Walter Little, the co-editor of Political Corruption in Europe and Latin America (London, 1996).
