Paperback. "A First Course in the New Mathematics" serves as a comprehensive introductory guide to fundamental mathematical principles, designed to bridge the gap between elementary arithmetic and higher-level mathematical thinking. This work emphasizes the practical application of mathematical concepts alongside theoretical understanding, reflecting the educational standards and pedagogical innovations of the early 20th century. The text covers a broad range of essential topics, including basic algebra, geometry, and numerical reasoning, all structured to foster a logical progression in the learner's skills. The author, Edward I. Edgerton, presents complex ideas with clarity, utilizing exercises and illustrative examples that ground abstract theories in real-world contexts. By focusing on problem-solving techniques and the development of analytical thought, the book remains a significant historical example of mathematical pedagogy. It is an invaluable resource for students of the history of education and those interested in the evolution of mathematics curricula. Its systematic approach ensures that the foundational pillars of the subject are accessible, making "A First Course in the New Mathematics" a classic instructional tool for mastering the language of numbers and logic. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
