Off white and light gray bank note with text in black and white. 9" wide by 4 1/2" tall. Two cent US Revenue stamp is affixed on bottom left corner. Light chipping to upper right corner. Light toning to edges and ink stains on back of bank note. This is a First Bill of Exchange issued by Wells, Fargo & Co in San Francisco January 6th, 1871. Exchange was for $55 currency to be paid to the order of Mrs. Z. Birdsall. On front of note is a red stamp stating that the amount was paid January 23. There is also a blue stamp from New York on verso along with three contemporary signatures in black ink. Bills of exchange, also known as drafts, were drawn as a set (first, second, third) and due to the uncertainty of the mail, were sent via different routes to the payee. The payment of any one of the bills cancels the others in the set to insure that the payee was only paid once. Codice articolo 013187
