Paperback. On the afternoon of 25th March 1911, a fire broke out on the eighth floor of a garment factory in lower Manhattan. Within twenty minutes, 146 workers were dead. Most were young immigrant women. The doors had been locked from the outside. This is not simply the story of a fire. It is the story of a system, one built on cheap labor, ignored warnings, and the calculated indifference of men who knew the risks and decided those risks belonged to someone else. FLAMES OF INJUSTICE traces the full arc of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory disaster, from the tenement streets where the workers lived, through the smoke-filled stairwells where many of them died, through the courtroom where their employers walked free, and into the legislative chambers where American workers finally won the protections that should have existed all along. It is a story about what happens when profit is placed above human life, and about what ordinary people can force a society to do when they refuse to accept that as inevitable. The Triangle fire changed American labor law forever. The lessons it taught are still being learned. For readers of narrative history, labor studies, and American social reform, this is the definitive account of the disaster that rewrote the rules of the American workplace.
