The first time Jason Rainier healed something he was four years old.
Fourteen years later he raised the dead.
Now he is a young man physically and emotionally scarred from a tragic fire that killed his mother when he was a child. A fire he could not heal her from. Jason hides away behind a dark leather mask that covers half his face, running a carnival left to him by his beloved Uncle, afraid to be seen except by those he calls his family, his fellow carnies.
Until the day aspiring journalist Gina Torelli walks onto the carnival grounds to investigate a story about a mysterious healing. Jason refuses to talk to her at first, but Gina works her way into his mind and his heart and soon they are both revealing the deep traumas behind the masks they wear, even as darker forces seek to find and destroy Jason before the truth can be revealed.
Healer. Martyr. Freak.
Who IS Jason Rainier?
The paranormal romance novel, Freak by author Marie D. Jones introduces us to Jason, a young man born with a gift to heal. After having survived a fire when he was six, Jason's world was never quite the same; his mother was gone forever and the scars he suffered from the fire left Jason a shy and closed-off child. Fortunately for Jason, his mother's brother, Uncle Henry took up the role of being a father to him. Having never known his real father, Jason was happy. Now, at twenty-years-old, life takes a tragic turn once more. Uncle Henry is dying. Reminded of the time when he lost his mother, Jason starts falling back into despair; his fear of being alone taking over once more. But Uncle Henry does not leave Jason without giving him something invaluable: advice to help him overcome his fears. Uncle Henry wants Jason to stop hiding from the world. To let go of the fear of being ridiculed because of his physical appearance. Then Jason meets Gina. He is immediately entranced by the girl but will he heed his uncle's advice or keep hiding from the world, including Gina?

''Freak'' is an emotional tale. After losing his mother as a child, Jason wears a facial mask to conceal scars he obtained in the fire that killed her. Following his mother's death, he is adopted by Uncle Henry and becomes a part of Henry's traveling carnival. Unexpectedly, Gina, a journalist working for ''The Bugle'', tracks him down after hearing rumors about his supernatural powers. Initially, Jason doesn't trust her, because he lives a secluded life, sheltered from the outside world. Finally, Gina succeeds in gaining his trust. They bond over their respective traumas and vulnerabilities. Behind the scenes, a corrupt political figure blackmails a prestigious religious leader into killing Jason. His reasons for wanting Jason dead are infuriating and shocking. There are many twists-and-turns in the book--even down to the last page.
The ending is beautiful and heartbreaking.
