Paperback. "The Function of Reason" is a seminal philosophical inquiry by Alfred North Whitehead that examines the dual nature of human intellect and its role in the advancement of civilization. In this profound work, Whitehead distinguishes between two primary modes of reason: the pragmatic reason directed toward survival and immediate practical ends, and the speculative reason that seeks an understanding of the world for its own sake. Whitehead argues that reason is not merely a tool for biological adaptation but a transformative force capable of transcending physical limitations to pursue truth and creative novelty.Through his analysis, Whitehead explores the tension between scientific materialism and the inherent vitality of thought, proposing that reason serves as a corrective to the decay of routine. By situating human intelligence within a broader evolutionary context, he offers a compelling defense of speculative thought as the driver of human progress. "The Function of Reason" remains an essential text for readers interested in process philosophy, epistemology, and the intersection of science and metaphysics. It provides a rigorous framework for understanding how the mind navigates the complexities of existence to seek a more harmonious and enlightened world. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
