Paperback. "Gay's Beggar's Opera; Its Content, History & Influence" offers a comprehensive and scholarly examination of John Gay's landmark eighteenth-century masterpiece. As one of the most significant works in the history of the British stage, "The Beggar's Opera" revolutionized the theatrical world by introducing the ballad opera format, effectively blending sharp social satire with the popular melodies of the time. This volume provides an in-depth exploration of the play's origins, analyzing its pointed critiques of political corruption and the social hypocrisy prevalent in London during the era of Sir Robert Walpole. The study meticulously details the structural innovations of the work, highlighting its departure from the rigid conventions of contemporary Italian opera and its immediate, widespread success. William Eben Schultz provides a thorough account of the production's historical reception, its various revivals, and the enduring cultural impact of iconic characters such as Captain Macheath and Polly Peachum. From the play's musical significance to its profound influence on the development of later musical drama, this book remains an essential resource for students and scholars of literature, musicology, and theatrical history seeking to understand the legacy of Gay's enduring work. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
