Descrizione dell’articolo da parte del venditore

Printed for J Taylor High Holborn 1795. Rebound in red cloth boards, with gilt basic title to spine. Lacking folding map, four plates present (matching the 1795 in the B.L.). Covers slightly sunned producing variable toning. Spine scuffed to head and tail. Corners slightly scuffed. Binding tight. New endpapers and pastedowns. First original page is the title page. The final page is plate 2 (plates 1&2 bound in to the rear; plates 4&3 bound in between pp92/93 of the second addenda, in that order). Title page heavily worn and with significant loss, subsequently professionally repaired. The first page of the preface suffers in a similar way, with significant repair. Heavy dampstaining affects all of the preface, contents pages and early text pages before gradually reducing in significance from p20 up to p33. Thereafter, there is some faint dampstaining from the upper edge, generally marginal. From then, the text is actually quite bright with minimal wear. Condition of plates: faint dampstain to upper corner of plates and further mottling to various degrees: 1&2 relatively bright; 3&4 more discoloured. Page 345 has contemporary notes to the margin. Marginal tear to page 153 of the second addenda. A summary of the contents is as follows: An early history of canals in Greece and Egypt; followed by chapters on Chinese, Russian, Scandinavian, French, Dutch canals; early English canals; methods of construction; extensive details of specific canals construction, costs and usage. This new edition includes further details of 20 navigation/canals in the first addenda and 43 in the second addenda (many being new but also some being extensions or alterations). Also included are a table of prices for carriage of goods and a table of length and lockage. Plate 1: lock construction. Plate 2: aqueduct construction. Plate 3: bridge for canal. Plate 4: accommodation bridge (swing). XX + 371pp + 33pp (1st add.) + 186pp (2nd add.). More details available on request. Extra postage will be necessary for delivery outside the U.K. (Ud5).…
