A comprehensive manual detailing the structure, duties and procedures, both clerical and practical, of the United Kingdom Coast Guard service during the mid-Victorian era. Starting with the order of command, from the Comptroller-General to Boy 2nd Class, the manual then details the specific duties of officers, NCO s and men. Specifics of correspondence are covered next, followed by the duties of officers in protection of the revenue. The next chapter details the claiming and division of rewards for seizures which is followed by a chapter on dealing with wrecks and salvage. Accounts, pay scales and allowances, the administration of buildings, rules governing pilots, stores, arms, quarantine etc are all covered and the final section which is quite large, covers what appears to be a myriad of different printed forms that coast guards may be required to fill in and submit. The text is followed by a long and detailed index at the end of the volume. A fascinating and very detailed overview of the operation of the UK Coast Guard service at this time. This is a rare volume. Worldcat and COPAC locate only one copy each of two earlier editions: 1829 and 1841 at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. No copies of this edition are located in any institutional library, nor any other copies of the earlier editions. Bound in contemporary half calf with cloth sides and a gold-lettered spine. Extremities of the binding rubbed, with the corners a little bumped and worn. Minor foxing to the first two pages.
