"UNRECORDED IN OCLC/COPAC: THE ADVENTURES OF LADY MANCHESTER. 12mo [13.8 x 9 cm]. 107 pp, (1); 83 pp, (1); 105 pp, (1), plus engr. frontispiece. Bound in contemporary quarter brown calf over marbled boards, with sky-blue endpapers; gilt title on spine, and all edges stained yellow. A very good copy. Unrecorded, substantially complete Italian translation of this curious novel centering on the adventures of Lady Jeanine of Manchester , daughter of Milord Manchester . The French original (Nanine de Manchester, 1802) is also a very rare book, recorded in the UK at the Bodleian only; the Italian Union Catalogue (ICCU) lists only the first two parts of this sole Italian adaptation, held at a single library in Catania, Sicily. However, it is likely that other parts were published, even if they have not survived, as the narrative does not seem to be complete by the end of the third part here. Jeannine lives in the shadow of her problematic brother, the cruel Sir Charles Manchester; and in the meantime she falls in love with the son of her father s main rival, Sidney. The plot features a cast of imaginative English characters: Lord Humfroy, Lord Arlington, Lady Hamilton, etc.; and Madame Lefevre s tale may well fall into the last vestiges of Anglomania which gripped literary Europe during the 18th century. However, almost nothing seems to be known of the author: even her near-contemporary Quérard, for example, merely calls her a romancière and list two works by her: Lucien, ou l Enfant abandonné (1801) and Nanine de Manchester (1802). * ICCU CATE\006625 (2 parts only); Quérard, La France littéraire V, p. 84".
