Chapter One
Early Life
It was midnight the thirty first day of March. Annie Cotton Thompson was having her first baby-Georgia Lee Thompson. The place was Grace, a small town in Mississippi. Who would have every thought that this small 5 pound baby would receive so many blessings from God. That would be the reason the name of the town of my birth means so much to me, for it reminds me of God's grace, and because of his wonderful Grace the true stories in this book occurred.
My daddy was Jim Thompson. My maternal grandparents were Frank and Mattie Cotton. I have one sister, Dorothy Helen, who is younger than I. My parents separated when I was nine years old. I never saw my dad again until just after my first child was born.
When I was ten we moved to Mayersville, Mississippi, where we lived on one side of a large house which had been converted to a duplex. Soon after we moved to Mayersville, my maternal grandparents moved in with us for several months. We also opened our small home to a woman and her young daughter who had no other place to live. The first winter they were with us, the woman became ill with pneumonia and died. The little girl was taken from us after her mother's funeral and placed in an orphanage. I was eleven when this happened, and grieved greatly for the child, who was a few years younger than I.
We soon had even more sadness. My mother also became ill with pneumonia. The recent death of the lady who had lived with us made me determined not to let the same fate befall my mother.
The dead woman had been laid out in small front room that had a fireplace in it. This room led to other parts of the house. As soon as her body was moved out, we put in a bed for Mother and moved her in. It was a cold winter, but I kept the fire going at all times. This kept the room warm day and night and also enabled me to keep a bed of hot coals going. Every couple of hours I would use the coals to heat a wool cloth in a pan of turpentine and Vick's salve; I would then place the cloth, as hot as she could stand it, on Mother's chest. I don't remember how many days I continued doing this, but she began to get better. I fed and bathed her faithfully until she recovered. She has often said if it had not been for me she would have died. I know that she was very ill, and at that time they didn't have the modern miracle drugs that they have today.
Everyone recognized my devotion to my mother, and they let me do everything for her. My grandmother did the cooking and cleaning, but she left mother's care to me. I don't believe I have ever been more determined about anything in my life than I was that my mother gets well.
My Love For God
Mayersville is a small town, located about twelve miles from Rolling Fork, Mississippi. When we lived there, the town had no church. A preacher would sometimes come on Sunday and preach wherever a place could be found, which was often the two-room schoolhouse. I remember going to one of these meetings when I was about ten or eleven years old. The people were excited to be having a get-together, and they talked so much among themselves that I thought they were not paying enough attention to the preacher.
"I love you more than anyone here, God," I thought to myself. Then I felt such a glow in my body that I knew that I would never forget that moment. I know now that this glow that I felt was the Holy Ghost, but at that time I knew nothing about the Spirit of God. There were probably people there who loved God as much as I did, but at the time I was sure that what I was feeling was very special.,
As far back as I can remember in my childhood, I was aware of God. It seemed that no one had to tell me about him; I just knew. Whenever I had work to accomplish, I would ask God to help me with it. Somehow I knew he was always with me, even though I don't recall any one ever telling me this.
Papa's Death
When I was about eleven years old, my mother married Leon Taylor. He proved to be a good stepfather to my sister and me. It was during those years, when we lived in Mississippi close to my dear grandparents, that I realized that Papa, my maternal grandfather, was very religious. Towards the end of his life, his greatest joy was reading the Bible. I remember him sitting for hours at a time sitting on the porch reading his Bible. Although Papa never mentioned to me what my life was going to be in later years, he did tell my mother.
One afternoon I stopped by my grandparent's house on the way home from school to see how Papa was; I was anxious because he had been sick for some time. My grandmother ask me to assist her in helping him to sit up because he was having trouble breathing. We helped him to sit on the side of the bed and supported him there because he was too weak to sit alone. His breathing became easier, so we laid him back down.
"Look there, Mattie, look there!" he said excitedly from his prone position.
"I don't see anything, Frank," she replied. She looked at me and shook her head, as if to tell me he was out of his head.
Then Papa, full of joy and excitement, told us he was seeing the most beautiful place and the people who were coming after him. He went on and on describing his vision to us, and soon afterward he died. I am sure that Papa, who was ready to go, went to a beautiful realm, for as he told us what he saw, his face reflected both delight and great happiness.
The Messenger Who Disappeared-An Angel?
We moved to Mobile, Alabama when I was about fourteen. At sixteen years of age I was working and living on my own. This was the time in my life when strange things began occurring, and these kinds of things have been happening to me every since.
I worked at Morrison's Cafeteria when it was on Royal Street in Mobile, to share expenses, I moved in with a girlfriend who lived in a war apartment, as they were called back then. Downstairs was a kitchen, a living and dining room combination, and a hall. The front door opened into the hall where there was a staircase that led to the two bedrooms, bath, and the hall upstairs. I was down stairs one evening waiting for my date to arrive; my roommate, the landlord, and his wife were all upstairs. Someone knocked on the front door. Thinking it was my date, I hurried to open it. The man who stood there was a complete stranger to me. He looked to be about twenty-five to thirty years old. Startled, I told him I thought he was my date.
He smiled. "Georgia, I have something to tell you," he said.
"I don't know you," I answered.
"But I know you; you are Georgia Thompson," he replied.
I asked him to come in. No sooner had he sat down on the couch than someone knocked on the door again. I told my visitor that it must be my date arriving, and asked him to wait until I answered the door to tell me his message. I let my date in and then turned and went straight back into the living room. I was gone no more than a moment, but the stranger was gone. He could not have left the room because the back door was bolted from the inside and the windows were tightly closed. There was no way he could have left the apartment without passing us on the way to the front door. We searched everywhere, but it was clear that he had not left; he had simply vanished. I never saw him again to my knowledge.
Oh, how I wish I could have heard the message this visitor was bringing. Now I realize that he must have been a spiritual being. I believe that had he been able to tell me what he came for, I would have started reading the Bible and praying much sooner.
The bible tells us:
Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unaware. Hebrews 13:2
While I cannot say for certain, of course, that he was an angel, I am positive that he disappeared.
Who Watches Over Me?
Soon after the incident of the stranger's disappearance from my apartment, a man began to appear to me at night when I was in bed. Sometimes he would be standing beside the bed, and at other times he would be sitting in a chair in the bedroom. Each time this man looked at me, he would gaze upon me with love; somehow I knew within myself that there was nothing to fear from him. In my heart I knew that he was there to watch over and protect me.
In spite of my feelings about his purpose, I would almost always scream because of his unexpected appearance. I would wake up and there he would be. When I screamed, he would disappear.
On September 4, 1943 I married Norwood Yates. Soon after our marriage, I was visited by the man again. This time he actually lifted me off the bed as if he were going to take me somewhere. I screamed and Norwood awoke. Seeing me lifted off the bed in the arms of a strange man, he immediately hit him with his fist. His hand passed right through the man's face. Then the man laid me back down and disappeared abruptly while we were both staring at him. He did not leave the room; he simply vanished, just as I had seen him do many times before.
This man continued appearing to me until about 1966.
The Berry
During those first years of my marriage, several other supernatural things happened to me. One day I was picking berries in the backyard. Not many of them were ripe because it was early in the season. I saw a big ripe berry through the fence, but try as I might I could not reach it. Finally, turning in disappointment to leave, I heard the following being spoken within me: "Pick up a stick and pull the vine to you." I looked down, and lying at my feet was a stick. I picked it up and pulled the vine through the fence.
This was a little thing, but it was the first time I remember being spoken to within myself. Somehow I knew that God had spoken to me. The excitement I felt lasted for days, and I had great expectations that He would speak to me again.
Dying And Returning
On February 18, 1946 our first child was born. She was a little baby who weighed just 5 pounds. I had a long and difficult labor, and after many hours they finally took me to the delivery room. While the baby was being born, I died.
My spirit left my body and rose above the doctors and nurses. I felt sorry for them because they all looked sad and worried as they worked over my body.
"Oh, Lord, why are they so worried? I have never cared less about the body on the table; I knew that it wasn't me. This was the real me, and I felt wonderful. I had never felt that good while I was alive. Then all of the sudden I was back in my body and feeling tired. This made me realize that you are more alive in death than you are in life.
The doctor told my husband that the baby was fine but that they had almost lost me. Three days later, on the day that I was supposed to take her home, the baby died of a brain hemorrhage. I was so glad that I had died first, because when they told me about her, it didn't hurt nearly as much. I knew what death was because I had been there. I know now that there is no death; there is only a crossing over to another dimension, and death should not be feared. We read in His word:
For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him. St. Luke 20:38
According to His word, the day of death is better than the day of birth:
A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth. Ecclesiastes 7:1
Seeing My Daddy
After the death of our baby, Norwood and my stepfather took her to North Alabama to bury her in the family plot. I stayed at my sister's home because I was too weak to make the trip. During this time my daddy came to my sister's house. We were pleased to see Daddy, but it had been so long that neither of us recognized him nor him us.
He had traveled a lot in his younger days with Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus. He was a champion trick rider and roper in the New Mexico area and was billed as a star attraction.
Daddy died several years ago, but his family has kept in touch with us these later years. Many of the Thompsons live in Louisiana (some around Crowley). When the terrible storm, Hurricane Frederic, hit Mobile, some of my daddy's people were the first to call with offers of help. There was nothing they could do at the time, but I know God has or will bless them for offering.
Norwood's People
Norwood had a very good mama and papa, and they were both dear to me. I believe that Norwood's papa was the smartest man I have ever known. His family was always good to us when we visited them. I was concerned when we went to see them in later years because we had so many children. Every year Norwood wanted us to spend our vacation with his people, and each year I grieved about it because I knew we were so much trouble.
Bless them all, Lord, because they always received us with love and kindness, as if our army of children were no bother at all.
All Things Work Together For Good To Them That Love God
Norwood was a Mobile city policeman, and I think he was a good one. He really loved his work, and surely it was the kind of work he was suited for. At times he worked extra jobs at stores, usually as a security guard. Norwood loved to talk, and those jobs were ideal because they gave him the opportunity to talk with many people.
As we had more and more children, Norwood stayed home less because he said that the children made him nervous. I am sure he loved us; he was just not the type of person who could stay home all the time. That was just the way he was.
Norwood's frequent absences may have been a blessing from God, because if he had been home all the time, I might not have read the Bible or prayed as often as I did. God made a place in my life for himself; He gave me time for prayer, Bible reading, and meditation. Who can say that God did not mean for Norwood to spend a lot of time away from home? God is a jealous God, and if wanted my attention for a time, the way was made for it. I believe that during that time in my life I was being prepared for my future life's work.
We were surrounded by pleasant neighbors who were always glad to take the children to different places as they were growing up. This was a blessing, for I saw that at least some of my children got to go places. And then when the older ones began driving, they took the younger ones out with them. In all of my married life, I hired a babysitter only once. I always stayed home or took the children with me. The only times I had any rest from the children were when I was in the hospital having another baby.
I enjoyed reading the Bible so much that there were times when I let my housework go, doing only what was necessary. I felt that I had to read until I knew what His Word was all about. There may have been dust on my furniture at times, but there was none on my Bible.
Norwood wasn't a mean person and very seldom fussed at me. There were times when I thought he was to stern with the children; on the other hand, there were times when I was not stern enough. In many ways Norwood was very good to me. If I didn't clean the house, he never said a word. I thank God that Norwood was so patient with me.
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28
My Daughter: Proof Of Life After Death
About eight years after the incident of my death, I had had four children: Sandra, Jimmie, Paul, and Barbara. Sandra was the oldest at seven. I had no help with raising them, and they kept me running continually. At night I was so tired that I would almost fall into bed.
