Throughout the Bible, God makes himself known as the one who defends, comforts and provides for the widow. From the days of Moses and the prophets, right up to the time of the Lord Jesus Christ and the early church, widows were the special object of God’s fatherly care. In this sensitively written book, Austin Walker looks at the accounts of women such as Naomi, Ruth, the widows of Zarephath and Nain, the Jerusalem widows, and Mary, the mother of the Lord Jesus Christ, and applies the Bible’s teaching by offering wise counsel, warm encouragement and practical advice. In particular, he encourages us all to keep looking to Jesus, who alone can truly sympathise with us in our sorrows and weaknesses.

Austin Walker was born in North London and studied at the University of Aberystwyth and then at Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia. On returning to the UK in 1971 he became involved in church-planting in Crawley, Sussex, becoming one of the pastors of what is now Maidenbower Baptist Church, Crawley. He retired in 2018 and is now in Castlefields Church, Derby and is an occasional preacher and writer. He has been married to Mai for over fifty years and they have four children and ten grandchildren.
