Paperback. On August 8, 1899, the sea entered Guayama and Puerto Rico began to come apart. By the next morning, rivers had torn through towns, mountain roads had vanished, telegraph lines were down, and thousands were missing or dead. In the island's first full year under American rule, the San Ciriaco hurricane became far more than a storm: it was a night when wind, water, and empire collided with catastrophic force. The Great Puerto Rico Hurricane follows that collision in gripping, scene-driven detail, from uneasy weather warnings and darkening skies to families trapped in collapsing houses, officials struggling to understand a disaster they could barely see, and survivors facing the slower terror that came after: hunger, ruined crops, and a harvest that would never come. At the center stands a shaken island and a new colonial government forced to prove what its rule meant when everything that connected Puerto Rico to itself had been destroyed.Vivid, deeply researched, and faithful to the historical record, this is narrative history with the urgency of a thriller and the weight of a reckoning. San Ciriaco killed approximately 3,400 people, but its consequences reached far beyond the dead. To understand Puerto Rico, American power, and the true afterlife of disaster, start here.
