Greece in the Making 1200–479 BC is an accessible and comprehensive account of Greek history from the end of the Bronze Age to the Classical Period. The first edition of this book broke new ground by acknowledging that, barring a small number of archaic poems and inscriptions, the majority of our literary evidence for archaic Greece reported only what later writers wanted to tell, and so was subject to systematic selection and distortion. This book offers a narrative which acknowledges the later traditions, as traditions, but insists that we must primarily confront the contemporary evidence, which is in large part archaeological and art historical, and must make sense of it in its own terms.
In this second edition, as well as updating the text to take account of recent scholarship and re-ordering, Robin Osborne has addressed more explicitly the weaknesses and unsustainable interpretations which the first edition chose merely to pass over. He now spells out why this book features no ‘rise of the polis’ and no ‘colonization’, and why the treatment of Greek settlement abroad is necessarily spread over various chapters. Students and teachers alike will particularly appreciate the enhanced discussion of economic history and the more systematic treatment of issues of gender and sexuality.

Descrizione dello Store
Trumpington Fine Books Limited has been in business for a number of years. We specialize in all books of distinction whether they be modern collectable first editions, monographs or books of reference, fine bindings or antiquarian. Or just simple affordable books, which we believe are of merit. We focus on describing our books thoroughly and aim to make each customer satisfied with their purchase. 'What it says on the tin'....is what should be in the tin. We also take great care in the packaging of our books - we virtually never have a complaint about books being damaged in transit and we aim to uphold this - despite the fact that it is considerably more expensive on time and materials (and thus money) to pack books well. We try and make our books as affordable as possible and we recognize that times are hard. We have many repeat customers and we are delighted to have them as they only confirm the above. On the rare occasion that things do go wrong, we will try very hard to rectify any problems. We are able to bulk purchase through Royal Mail and aim to make no money out of postage - in point of fact, after taking into account the cost of packaging materials, we take a loss on postage - all our discounts are passed on to the customer. In our business we will endeavour to always uphold the customer. So in short, buy with confidence! Testimonial from Jose in Spain who recently bought some books from us : THE BOOKS HAVE ARRIVED IN PERFECT ORDER AND WITH THE EXPECTED QUALITY. YOU PACK FOR WAR! THANK YOU. LOOK FORWARD TO DEALING WITH YOU AGAIN SOON. BEST WISHES JOSE and we look forward to his next point of contact with us.…
