This text for personnel seeking to qualify as Awareness- or Operational-Level responders to hazardous materials incidents is based on the National Fire Protection Association's Standard for Professional Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials Incidents ; the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Title 29 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response ; and the Emergency Responder Guidelines (2002) of the Office for Domestic Preparedness. The next five chapters go through the incident problem-solving process with discussion of hazardous materials identification, incident management elements, strategic goals and tactic objectives, personal protective equipment, and contamination and decontamination. The text concludes with chapters on incident-specific strategies and terrorist and other criminal activities. The included CD-ROM contains many of the government and noncopyrighted reference materials cited in the text and a photo section of different types of hazardous materials containers.
