The Memoirs of Hegesippus provides a compelling modern translation of the surviving fragments of one of Christianity's earliest and most vital historians. Writing in the mid-second century, Hegesippus embarked on a monumental journey across the Roman Empire, traveling to theological epicenters like Corinth and Rome. His mission was clear: to interview bishops, document the unbroken line of apostolic succession, and prove that the true teachings of Jesus Christ remained uncorrupted across the globe.

Though his original five-volume history has been lost to time, the precious fragments preserved by later historians like Eusebius offer an unparalleled window into the struggles and triumphs of the early church. Far more than a mere registry of names, the Memoirs of Hegesippus delves into profound themes of theological unity, the martyrdom of key figures like James the Just, and the fierce intellectual battles against emerging Gnostic sects.

What You'll Discover in This Modern Translation:

• The Apostolic Succession Follow Hegesippus's historical investigations as he traces the lineage of bishops back to the original apostles, establishing a unified, orthodox faith across the ancient Mediterranean.
• The Martyrdom of James the Just Read the striking, detailed account of the death of the brother of Jesus, a pivotal and dramatic moment in the history of the Jerusalem church that Hegesippus uniquely preserved.
• The Battle Against Heresy Explore how early believers identified and combated corruptions of the faith, fighting to maintain the pure, original teachings of the Lord against secretive and divisive cults.
• A Window into the Second-Century Church Gain a deeper understanding of the cultural, political, and spiritual landscape of early Christianity before the formalization of the biblical canon.
