Paperback. "Hindu-Javanese Musical Instruments" is a foundational scholarly study exploring the rich organological heritage of Java during its transformative Hindu-Buddhist era. Written by the pioneering ethnomusicologist Jaap Kunst, this work meticulously documents a vast array of instruments, drawing upon historical evidence found in the intricate bas-reliefs of ancient monuments such as Borobudur and Prambanan. The book provides a detailed classification of percussion, stringed, and wind instruments, tracing their cultural and structural evolution. The text serves as a vital bridge between archaeology and musicology, offering deep insights into the historical precursors of the modern gamelan ensemble. Kunst examines the artistic and technical development of instruments within the context of Javanese society, highlighting the unique blend of local innovation and external cultural influences that shaped the island's musical identity. This work remains an essential resource for scholars of Asian music history, ethnomusicology, and Indonesian culture, providing a comprehensive overview of the craftsmanship and performance traditions that defined ancient Java. Through rigorous research and historical analysis, "Hindu-Javanese Musical Instruments" preserves the musical legacy of a civilization that continues to fascinate historians and musicians alike. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
