The characters debate the customs and thoughts of the Avaïtes, the people of the imaginary land of Calejava.   An eighteenth-century work considered historically significant as it depicts ‘for the first time, a religious system which is unequivocally deistic.’ (Early Deism in France, C.J.Betts).
