Occasional foxing & a little yellowing of the paper with the occasional creased corner & ink splash, upper board detached with the leather a little rubbd along the edges & worn to the head & tail of the spine, Old ownership signature to the title with relating offsetting to the blank opposite, Ex Library [ Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland ] with two ink stamps, a nice copy, in need of some restoration. Reissue ( containing an 8 page postscript ) of a detailed work on the treatment of various Abdominal Hernias ( or ruptures ) by the Glasgow Surgeon Robert Houstoun [ 1678 - 1734 ]. In 1701 he had removed a large growth or cyst from a 58 year old patient & thus performed the first ovariotomy, and in so doing achieved lasting fame. He would in 1724 be asked to give a lecture before the Royal Society in London on this operation, such was its importance. Here he gives a comprehensive account of the treatment of the hernia, ancient & modern with recipts and relates, with full credit, the details of the secret cure for Ruptures which was work of Katherine Bowles. The Postcript at the end rejects the claims of a Dr Littlejohn with regard the 'Secret' cure - Littlejohn had approached the Admiralty & passed off Bowles' cure as his own. She responded with a short work of her own [ 1726 ] and Houstoun here asks readers to decide who was the true inventor of the cure. 300 grams.
