Second edition--Revised and Enlarged. 4to ( 23 x 15 cm); 265 pp.; frontispiece and 122 illustrations of house and building designs, with plans. Owner's name and stamp to title page and to margin of one plate; some smudging; wear to spine ends; rear fly lacking; else a good copy or better in original gilt-stamped green cloth. A collection of 122 designs for houses, villas, cottages, churches, carriage houses, etc., in a wide range of styles by Hobbs's Philadelphia firm. Each design is described and given an estimated price; an introduction provides "practical hints in regard to the cultivation of artistic taste, choice of situation, style, construction, heating, ventilation, etc.to aid its readers in the cultivation of taste and the love of the beautiful." Most of the designs originally appeared in "Godey's Ladies' Book", and the book is dedicated to the Ladies of America. Originally published in 1873 with 84 designs, this edition includes 38 additional designs. (Hitchcock 596).
